December Fun Facts:

• December’s name originates from the Latin word “decem” meaning ten. It was originally the 10th month on the Roman calendar which started with March.

• December 7th is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. In 1941 on this date the Japanese attacked Pearl harbor Navy Base killing 2300 Americans.

• Three Global Diverse Celebrations take place in December: 

  • Hanukkah starts on December 14th. It is an eight-day Jewish Celebration of Light.

  • Christmas is celebrated on December 25th. It commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ.

  • Kwanzaa is a celebration of African heritage, unity, and culture. It begins on December 26th and ends on January 1st.

• Winter Solstice occurs on December 21st. It is the shortest day of the year in the Northern hemisphere.

• December 28th is National Card Playing Day. It is celebrated as an ideal day to stay home and play a spirited game of cards.
